DISCOs deny households 6,390MW in 3 days

Nigerian households lost a total of 6,390 Megawatts, MW, of electricity in three days from the 11 Electricity Distribution Companies, DISCOs due to high frequency, resulting from unavailability of infrastructures.

The office of the Vice President of Nigeria, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, stated in its latest report that, between Friday, 24th and Sunday 26th of August, 2018, a total of 6,390 mw of electricity was not generated due to high frequency, resulting from unavailability of distribution infrastructure.

The report also noted that, the peak generation for August 26, 2018 was 4,097mw, adding that, “Estimated Amount Lost to Insufficient Gas Supply, Distribution, Transmission and Water Reserves to date in 2018 N336 billion.

The Executive Director, Association of Nigerian Electricity Distributors, Mr. Sunday Oduntan, had said that, Nigeria must generate at least 180,000 megawatts of electricity in order to have adequate and stable power supply. Oduntan had said the Discos were not responsible for the erratic power supply in the country.

He had said, “Nigeria has no credible population census, and you cannot distribute power without accurate census. Nigeria needs about 180, 000 megawatts for there to be adequate power supply.

“South Africa, with 67 million people, generates 48,000 megawatts and they are now even working to increase the generation to 79,000MW. 5,150 megawatts was the maximum we generated since 1980. “Let us be sincere with ourselves; to generate power is expensive. To do 1,000 megawatts, you will need about $1.2bn.”
