A compressed natural gas (CNG)-powered luxury bus exploded at a major transport hub in Kaduna State on Sunday, triggering panic among residents and commuters. The incident occurred at the Mando Motor Park, a busy terminal where several interstate buses were preparing for scheduled journeys. Witnesses described hearing a loud blast that shook the surrounding area and drew immediate attention to the scene.
According to reports, the explosion happened in the early hours of the morning, around 2:00 a.m. to 3:00 a.m., when the buses were parked and largely unattended. At least one luxury bus was severely damaged, while others nearby were also affected by the force of the blast. Debris from the explosion was scattered across the terminal, leaving visible destruction within the motor park.
Eyewitnesses said the explosion occurred suddenly and without warning, intensifying fear among nearby residents. Some described the scene as chaotic, with people rushing to understand what had happened. Despite the intensity of the blast, the timing of the incident—when passenger activity was minimal—helped prevent a potentially higher level of damage and casualties.
Authorities, including the Kaduna State Police Command, quickly responded to the incident and cordoned off the area. Initial speculation suggested the possibility of a bomb blast, but police later clarified that the explosion was not linked to any terrorist activity. Instead, preliminary findings pointed to a mechanical or gas-related issue involving the CNG-powered vehicle.
Further investigation revealed that the explosion was likely caused by the overfilling of the bus’s gas tank. Officials explained that improper handling or excessive pressure in the compressed natural gas system may have triggered the blast. The affected vehicle was evacuated from the scene, and security personnel ensured that normal activities gradually resumed at the motor park.
Fortunately, no casualties were recorded in the incident, a development many described as remarkable given the scale of the explosion. Transport operators and workers at the park expressed relief that no passengers or staff were inside the vehicles at the time. However, the destruction of newly acquired luxury buses has raised concerns among transport companies operating in the area.
The incident has reignited debate over the safety of CNG-powered vehicles in Nigeria, especially as the country promotes gas as an alternative to petrol and diesel. Experts have emphasized the need for strict safety standards, proper training, and regular maintenance of gas-powered systems. Authorities have promised a full investigation, with the aim of preventing similar incidents as Nigeria continues its transition toward cleaner energy in transportation.
