By Oke PeterThe Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) wishes to inform the public of a fire incident that occurred at approximately 6:30 a.m. on August 5, 2025, at the Egbin Power Plc facility. The incident affected one of TCN’s critical assets — a 150MVA 330/132/33kV Inter-Bus Transformer II — located at the Egbin Transmission Substation.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the fire originated from a faulty 33kV instrument transformer (CT/VT) installed by Egbin Power Plc. The faulty equipment, part of the power station’s service transformer, is directly connected to the 33kV side of TCN’s transformer. The resulting fire caused significant damage, including a rupture to the main tank of TCN’s 150MVA transformer, leading to oil leakage.

TCNAs a consequence, there has been a temporary reduction in bulk power supply to the Ikorodu and Odogunyan 132/33kV Transmission Substations, which feed parts of the IKEDC and IBEDC franchise areas. Additionally, Sagamu Lines 1 and 2, as well as Maryland Line 2, on the 132kV network within Lagos State, have been impacted.

At the time of the incident, a total load of 47MW was affected. This load was promptly transferred to the second available 150MVA transformer within the substation, which is currently operating under strain. Unfortunately, the capacity deficit has since increased, resulting in continued load-shedding across all affected areas.

We appeal for the understanding and patience of electricity customers as TCN works diligently to replace the damaged transformer and restore full power supply. TCN has notified both IKEDC and EKEDC to implement necessary load management strategies within their respective areas. Urgent efforts are already underway to procure and install a replacement transformer.We sincerely regret the inconvenience caused to the two distribution companies and electricity consumers in the affected regions. TCN remains committed to restoring normal bulk supply in the shortest possible time.
