The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has faulted the Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC) over what it described as misinformation regarding an incident at the Lekki Transmission Substation on August 26, 2026.


TCN, in a statement issued to clarify the incident, disputed EKEDC’s claim that TCN’s T11 transformer tripped unexpectedly and was awaiting inspection.


According to TCN, the incident occurred at about 4:34 a.m. when EKEDC’s Oniru 33kV and Agungi 33kV feeders simultaneously tripped due to overcurrent and earth fault.


The transmission company explained that the fault subsequently resulted in the inter-tripping of the primary and secondary breakers of its TR1 60MVA, 132/33kV transformer.

The incident was accompanied by a heavy bang and smoke, TCN said.


The company added that its maintenance crew responded promptly to the incident and rehabilitated the damaged secondary breaker, while both the primary and secondary breakers were restored later the same day.


However, TCN said another trip occurred when EKEDC attempted a trial closure of its Oniru feeder, as the same relay indications reappeared.


This, according to the transmission company, necessitated further corrective work at the substation.


TCN stressed that there was no outage on its T11 transformer as claimed by EKEDC, insisting that the incident was strictly associated with the DisCo’s Oniru and Agungi 33kV feeders.


“TCN’s technical team has been on-site, working assiduously to restore supply within the shortest possible time,” the company said.


The transmission company assured electricity customers affected by the incident that it was actively working to address the fault and restore normal supply.


TCN also apologised for the inconvenience caused by the incident, while reaffirming its commitment to strengthening the reliability and resilience of the transmission network.


The latest development comes amid continued concerns over coordination between Nigeria’s transmission and distribution operators, particularly in the management of faults that affect electricity supply to customers.


TCN said it would continue working to put in place a more robust transmission network capable of supporting improved electricity supply across the country.
