Meta, the parent company of Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram, intends to purchase some of its renewable electricity from the German energy group RWE, the company announced on Wednesday.

Two long-term electricity supply contracts have been concluded with Meta for two solar parks currently under construction in the United States, the German energy conglomerate said. The value of the contracts was not initially disclosed.

Construction work has already begun on a 274-megawatt project in Illinois and a 100-megawatt project in Louisiana. The solar parks are expected to be commissioned for the end of 2025.

RWE said it is the third-largest renewable energy company in the United States.

Meta manager: Goal is 100% green electricity
“Partnering with renewable energy providers like RWE to bring new solar energy projects online is an important part of our approach to energy procurement,” Urvi Parekh, the Meta manager responsible for renewable energy, said in a press release.

He said Meta’s “aim is to cover 100%” of the company’s electricity for its data centres and offices to come from renewables.
