Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has called for collaboration between states and the Federal Government to achieve a sustainable energy future.

Sanwo-Olu made the call during the forum of Commissioners of Powers and Energy in Nigeria, held in Lagos, yesterday, where he mentioned that the task before the commissioners could not be tackled in isolation, hence the need for collaboration.

He, therefore, emphasised the need to harmonise policies, streamline regulatory frameworks, and incentivise investments in renewable energy technologies.

“I am inspired that the synergy on display in this forum is a testament to what we can achieve when states and stakeholders unite toward a common goal. The collaborative spirit evident here reassures me that a brighter and more sustainable energy future for Nigeria is within reach.

“The forum is a clarion call for a national energy renaissance. Together, we can chart a path to energy independence, secure reliable power for our industries, and meet global commitments to reduce carbon emissions. Lagos State pledges its unwavering support in achieving this shared vision,” he said.

He, therefore, urged the commissioners to brace for the challenge, saying that it’s their duty as leaders to ensure that they meet energy demand efficiently.

Director-General of Nigeria Governors’ Forum, Dr Abdulateef Shittu, who was represented by the Director of Legal, Chijoke Chukwu, said the gathering was aimed at discussing important issues concerning implementing the Electricity Act 2023.

He described the implementation of the Electricity Act as a vital step towards achieving a more efficient, reliable, and sustainable energy sector in Nigeria.

MEANWHILE, the Ogun State Government has promised to key into the new national policy to generate their energy through circular economic practices for further industrial growth.

Commissioner for the Environment, Ola Oresanya, gave the assurance, yesterday while welcoming a delegation of the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) National Experts on Advancing Nigeria’s Green and Just Transition to Net Zero Through Circular Economy Practices to the state in Abeokuta.

Oresanya said that since clean energy is so important to the state, there is a need to key into the national policy that will lead to the production of cleaner energy in the state.

Also speaking, the leader of the delegation for UNIDO national experts, Oluyomi Banjo, said Ogun State is one of the five states that passed the organisation’s assessment tests on advancing Nigeria’s green and just transition to net zero through circular economic practices.
