The Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN) has officially launched the Renewed Hope Solarization Project, a major initiative aimed at expanding clean energy access to Nigeria’s educational and healthcare institutions.
During a press briefing in Abuja, Dr. Mustapha Abdullahi, Director General and CEO of the ECN, announced that the project will supply 2 megawatts of renewable energy to each of the 37 federal universities spread across Nigeria’s 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). Much like a steady heartbeat powering the nation’s educational core, this energy boost is expected to ensure a stable and sustainable power supply for academic institutions, contributing to Nigeria’s broader energy resilience goals.
Further extending its reach, the government will also install 2-megawatt solar hybrid systems in each of the 37 tertiary hospitals nationwide. This step is envisioned to enhance healthcare delivery by providing hospitals with reliable, eco-friendly electricity — a critical improvement much like reinforcing the backbone of the healthcare system.
Addressing concerns about the ₦10 billion approval for the solar electrification of the Presidential Villa, Dr. Abdullahi emphasized that the investment aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s vision of national energy prosperity. He reassured the public that the project is part of a larger strategy to stabilize the country’s electricity supply, implement nationwide prepaid metering, and drive Nigeria toward achieving its sustainable development objectives.
