The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has intensified its efforts to combat vandalism and illegal excavations around transmission towers with a sensitization programme held on August 20, 2025, in Umelu Community, Benin City, Edo State. The event, hosted at the palace of the Enogie of Umelu, sought to educate residents on the dangers of tampering with transmission infrastructure and the broader impact on power supply and community safety.
Engr. C.C. Iwuamadi, General Manager, Transmission, Benin Region, commended the community’s ongoing commitment to protecting transmission assets within their jurisdiction. He stressed the critical role of collaboration in safeguarding these national resources, warning that vandalism could lead to severe consequences, including loss of lives, damage to property, and disruption of the National Grid.
The event attracted key stakeholders such as community chiefs, youth leaders, representatives from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), and members of the media. By engaging these groups, TCN is adopting a comprehensive approach to curb vandalism and secure its facilities, reinforcing its commitment to ensuring a stable power supply nationwide.
This programme in Benin is part of TCN’s broader nationwide campaign to raise awareness about protecting transmission infrastructure. Earlier this year, similar initiatives were successfully conducted in Abuja, Port Harcourt, Lagos, and Enugu. TCN plans to extend these efforts to additional states, focusing on communities hosting transmission lines and towers to foster vigilance and collective responsibility.
Through ongoing engagement with local communities and stakeholders, TCN aims to enhance the security of its facilities, contributing to the reliability and sustainability of Nigeria’s National Grid.
