The Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) has temporarily suspended its nationwide industrial action involving the Dangote Petroleum Refinery, following a constructive intervention by the Federal Government and positive engagement with representatives of the company.
PENGASSAN President, Festus Osifo, announced the suspension on Wednesday in Abuja after intensive negotiations that extended into the early hours, with both parties working towards mutual understanding and resolution.
The strike, which began on Sunday, was in response to concerns raised by the union regarding labor practices. However, the Federal Government’s timely mediation, along with Dangote Refinery’s willingness to engage in dialogue, paved the way for a peaceful resolution and the suspension of the strike.
While PENGASSAN expressed reservations about certain aspects of the agreement, the union acknowledged the government’s efforts and emphasized the importance of ongoing dialogue. The suspension of the strike reflects a commitment to industrial peace and respect for institutions.
Osifo stated, “In the spirit of patriotism and respect for the government’s mediation, we are suspending the strike action. We remain hopeful that all parties will uphold their commitments.”
The Dangote Petroleum Refinery, Africa’s largest refinery with a capacity of 650,000 barrels per day, has reaffirmed its dedication to fair labor practices, employee welfare, and compliance with regulatory standards.
The company continues to play a pivotal role in transforming Nigeria’s downstream sector, creating jobs, and boosting domestic refining capacity. Its management has shown a commitment to resolving labor-related issues through established procedures and institutional channels.
As dialogue continues, stakeholders remain optimistic that the resolution will further strengthen the refinery’s role as a key driver of Nigeria’s energy independence and industrial growth.
