As part of its commitment to environmental sustainability and community empowerment, Sahara Group Foundation, the corporate social impact vehicle of Sahara Group, has commissioned its 15th Go-Recycling Hub in Ijede, Ikorodu Local Government Area of Lagos State.
Strategically located opposite the General Hospital in Ijede, the new hub strengthens the Foundation’s growing recycling campaign and builds on the success of 14 existing hubs across Lagos. The Sahara Go-Recycling Initiative is designed to foster a circular economy by promoting responsible waste disposal, enabling resource recovery, and creating income-generating opportunities for local communities.
“The launch of the Ijede Go-Recycling Hub is not just about environmental sustainability,” said Chidilim Menakaya, Director at Sahara Group Foundation.
“It is about redefining value, enabling economic empowerment, and building resilient communities. Every plastic bottle, aluminum can, or piece of paper recycled here represents a step toward a cleaner environment, stronger livelihoods, and a future where waste becomes wealth.”
The event drew notable attendees, including the CEO of Egbin Power Plc, senior executives from Sahara Group, Egbin Power Plc, Ikeja Electric, representatives of the Ijede Local Government Development Area, officials from Ijede General Hospital, community leaders, and residents.
Mokhtar Bounour, CEO of Egbin Power Plc, added: “At Sahara, Egbin, Ikeja Electric, and across all our businesses, we believe in transforming intention into action. A cleaner Ijede means a healthier Ikorodu and, ultimately, a stronger Nigeria. This initiative not only promotes public health but also drives economic empowerment.”
Representing the Executive Chairman of Ijede LCDA, Hon. Kabir Femi Kareem, Vice Chairman, emphasized the hub’s relevance to residents:
“This project embodies environmental sustainability and value creation. By transforming waste into resources, we improve our environment, reduce emissions, save energy, and create job opportunities. I urge all Ijede residents to embrace this initiative and reduce improper waste disposal.”
High Chief Mustapha Lasisi, Baale of Ipakan Community, Ijede, lauded the collaboration between Sahara Group Foundation, Egbin Power Plc, Ijede LCDA, and EcoBarter, describing the initiative as a significant contribution to the economic well-being of the community.
Since inception, the Sahara Go-Recycling Initiative has collected over 500 tonnes of recyclable waste, facilitated payouts exceeding ₦50 million to participants and positively impacted more than 1,000 households
The newly commissioned Ijede hub — developed in partnership with Egbin Power Plc, Ijede LCDA, and EcoBarter — serves as a convenient drop-off point for recyclable materials such as plastics, paper, cartons, and aluminum cans. Residents can exchange sorted waste for incentives, further strengthening the local economy.
The hub joins a growing network of locations across Lagos, including Ijora, Ikorodu, Agege, Festac, Onigbongbo, Lagos Island, Oworonshoki, Ikotun, Apapa, Igbogbo Baiyeku, Kosofe, Ifako-Ijaye, and Navy Town.
Mrs. Ayodele Michael Oluwakemi, Council Manager of Ijede Local Government, encouraged residents to participate actively:
“Sorting and turning in recyclables for value not only supports household incomes but contributes to a cleaner, greener Ijede.”
Roseline Idehai, representing EcoBarter, emphasized the importance of partnerships in driving change:
“At EcoBarter, we see waste as opportunity. Our collaboration with Sahara Group Foundation turns that opportunity into tangible, sustainable impact. We empower people to exchange waste for value — transforming behavior and inspiring action.”
Mr. Disu Shoyiga, Personal Assistant to the Executive Chairman of Ijede Local Government, echoed the health benefits of the project:
“A cleaner environment translates directly into healthier lives. Beyond the health gains, this initiative also delivers strong economic value. We thank Sahara Group Foundation and are committed to supporting the success of this hub.”
Reaffirming the Foundation’s vision, Chidilim Menakaya concluded: “The Sahara Go-Recycling project is creating a ripple effect across Lagos, helping communities recognize the value of responsible waste management. Through strategic partnerships, we’re amplifying impact and building sustainable ecosystems for future generations.”

Looking ahead, Sahara Group Foundation plans to expand the Go-Recycling Initiative to more communities in Lagos and across Africa, as part of its mission of “Building Sustainable Communities through EXTRApreneurship.”
