Nigeria has cemented its position as a major force in the global energy landscape, ranking among the world’s top 10 countries with the largest natural gas reserves. With the biggest gas deposits in Africa, the country stands out as a key player in meeting rising global energy demand, even as reserves remain heavily concentrated among a few dominant nations.

1. Russia has the largest natural gas reserves in the world, with 1,688,228,000 MMcf, accounting for 24.39% of global reserves. The combined reserves of Russia, Iran, and Qatar exceed half of the world’s total natural gas reserves, highlighting their global dominance.
2. Iran ranks second with 1,183,019,000 MMcf, representing 17.09% of the world’s natural gas reserves. Russia’s reserves are significantly larger than any other country, with about 40% more gas than Iran alone.
3. Qatar holds the third position, with 858,098,000 MMcf, contributing 12.40% to the global share. Iran and Qatar share the world’s largest gas field (South Pars/North Dome), which contributes heavily to their high rankings.
4. The United States is fourth, with 322,234,000 MMcf, making up 4.65% of total global reserves. The Middle East contributes a major portion of global reserves, with four countries- Iran, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE- appearing in the top 10.

5. Saudi Arabia ranks fifth, possessing 303,284,000 MMcf, which equals 4.38% of the world share. Turkmenistan’s position in the top six reflects the importance of Central Asia as a key region for untapped gas resources.
6. Turkmenistan stands sixth with 265,000,000 MMcf, accounting for 3.83% of global reserves. The United States has relatively smaller reserves compared to the top three but remains a global leader due to advanced shale gas extraction technologies.
7. The United Arab Emirates is seventh, with 215,098,000 MMcf, representing 3.11% of the total share. China’s large reserves are still insufficient to meet its high domestic demand, making it a major importer of natural gas.
8. Venezuela ranks eighth with 201,343,000 MMcf, contributing 2.91% to global reserves,
Venezuela is the only South American country in the top 10, showing the region’s relatively smaller share in global gas reserves.
