TCN targets July completion of Amuwo Substation upgrade, installs New GIS and 60MVA transformers

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has assured the public that rehabilitation works at the Amuwo 132/33kV Transmission Substation are progressing steadily and remain on schedule for completion in July 2026.

In a statement, TCN disclosed that the upgrade project, being executed by its contractor, commenced in March 2026 and has continued as planned. The company said installation of Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS) equipment is currently underway, while two new 60MVA power transformers have already been delivered to replace the existing 30MVA units.

TCN explained that upon completion of the rehabilitation, the substation’s capacity will increase by an additional 60MVA, significantly improving power transmission and supply reliability within the network.

To minimise disruptions during the rehabilitation period, TCN noted that it deployed two mobile transformers earlier to enable the Eko and Ikeja Electricity Distribution Companies (DisCos) to continue power offtake for their customers, thereby preventing a total blackout in the affected areas.
