Eko Carbon Exchange (ECX), a platform for education and awareness on environmental emissions, as well as carbon pricing and climate token-based emission trading, as a voluntary mitigation pathway under the UNFCCC Kyoto Protocol has announced that it will hold a Breakfast Dialogue on waste, emissions and wealth creation.

According to a statement signed by its Director, Innocent Azih, the aim of the Dialogue is to drive public and interest-holder participation deeper into solution provision. “We have created the platform to educate socioeconomic actors and stakeholders incentive the general public on how managing solid wastes under a pricing and climate token incentive framework.”

“It aggregates and quantifies emissions from local economic activities to create products pricing and incentivized benefits sharing to appropriate actors.”

Lagos State is heavy on solid waste generation. However, it has innovated and grown programmes to manage solid wastes to clean out the environment. Dumpsites or landfills in Lagos are one of the greatest waste receivers in the world. They are sources of heavy poisonous gaseous emissions – CO2, nitrous oxide, nitrogen dioxide and sulphur related gases and as major sources of methane (CH4) gas, a key contributor to global warming.

The Dialogue will be based on a presentation on, Waste Management: Landfills, Solid Waste disposal and gaseous emissions challenges in Lagos.

Managing Director of Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, will be the key speaker at the event.

Expected at the Dialogue are waste and environment management agencies and enterprises, waste recyclers, volunteers and renewable resource and development professionals and financial actors and other economic actors.

The event will take place at the Eko Innovation Center, 50 Awolowo Road, Ikoyi, Lagos by 9.00 am.
