Speaking during the session, the Chairman, Executive Board of WAPP, Engr. Dr. Sule Abdulaziz expressed satisfaction with the 2023 working document.
The commissioning into service of the new 150MVA power transformer has restored the capacity of the substation by 132MW.
Engr. Sule Abdulaziz, the Managing Director of Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), said this in Abuja while inspecting ongoing projects in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) on Wednesday.
The restoration of the affected part of the grid commenced immediately at 11.55am with Osogbo/Ihovbor back to the grid followed by Jebba/Osogbo, Kainji/Jebba, Benin/Onisha, Shiroro/Kaduna, Shiroro/Katampe, and Alaoji/Ikot-Ekpene. Others are Lokoja/Gwagwalada, Odukpani/Ikot Ekpene, Benin/Omotosho, Oke-Aro/Ikeja West, Egbin/Oke-Aro and Kaduna/Kano.”
“TCN apologizes for every inconvenience to the Government and electricity customers in Cross River State and pledges to do all it can to ensure quick restoration of bulk supply to the area,” she concluded.
By now, Nigeria should be building a second national power grid as well as regional grids, mini and micro-grids to distribute as much electricity as possible. Moreover, policies should drive private investment in alternative power sources, especially renewables – solar, wind, hydro, tidal, geothermal and biomass.
“Inspite of this setback, we are set to restore the grid as quickly as possible. The Ministries of Power and Labour and Employment are currently meeting with the Union Officials in order to resolve the issues.”
Oduntan, who stated that Nigeria would require 200,000mw of power generation to meet the electricity need of its 200 million citizens, added that going by international standards, 1,000mw was needed to serve one million people.
The West African Power Pool (WAPP), is planning to create a Liquidity Enhancement Revolving Fund, LERF, for the ECOWAS Regional Electricity Market.
