Electricity blackouts are often caused by storms, equipment failures, or fuel shortages. But some of the world's most memorable outages were so unusual that they became part of energy folklore. From a single misconfigured relay plunging millions into darkness to a tree triggering a nationwide collapse, these incidents reveal how fragile even the most sophisticated power systems can be.
1. The blackout triggered by a single relay
Location: Northeastern United States and Eastern Canada
Date: November 9, 1965
Duration: Up to 13 hours in some areas
People Affected: About 30 million
At 5:16 p.m. during the evening rush hour, a protective relay at a transmission facility in Ontario, Canada, operated incorrectly. What should have been a routine safety action triggered a chain reaction across the interconnected grid.
Within minutes, New York State, parts of seven U.S. states, and sections of Canada were in darkness. Nearly 800,000 people were trapped in New York City's subway system, while thousands were stranded in elevators and office buildings. National Guardsmen and off-duty police officers were mobilized to manage the crisis. The incident became one of the earliest and most famous examples of a cascading grid failure.
What makes this outage bizarre is that a single protective device—designed to improve reliability—helped bring down one of the world's largest power systems.
2. When lightning sparked a night of chaos
Location: New York City, United States
Date: July 13–14, 1977
Duration: More than 25 hours
The summer of 1977 was already difficult for New Yorkers. The city was battling economic hardship, high crime, and a severe heatwave. Then lightning struck transmission infrastructure supplying the city.
The resulting blackout was unlike most power outages. Rather than community solidarity, the city witnessed widespread looting, vandalism, and arson. More than 1,600 stores were damaged, over 1,000 fires were reported, and thousands of arrests were made. Power eventually returned, but the blackout left a lasting mark on the city's history.
The oddity here was not the technical failure itself, but how the loss of electricity exposed deep social tensions already simmering beneath the surface.
3. The tree that switched off a Nation
Location: Italy
Date: September 28, 2003
Duration: Up to 12 hours in most regions
People affected: Approximately 56 million
In one of Europe's strangest energy incidents, a power line carrying electricity from Switzerland to Italy came into contact with a tree and automatically disconnected.
The loss of that line forced electricity onto other transmission routes, overloading them in succession. Before operators could stabilize the system, the entire Italian peninsula lost power.
The outage occurred during a night when many Italians were participating in public cultural events. Hundreds became trapped in metro systems, thousands were stranded at railway stations, and large sections of the country spent the night in darkness.
That a single tree could contribute to a nationwide blackout remains one of the most extraordinary reminders of how interconnected modern grids have become.
4. The downtown that lost power for five weeks
Location: Auckland, New Zealand
Date: January–March 1998
Duration: Approximately five weeks
Most blackouts last hours. This one lasted more than a month.
Auckland's central business district depended heavily on four aging underground transmission cables. One failed. Then another. Increased stress was placed on the remaining cables, which also failed.
Large parts of the city's commercial centre were left without electricity for weeks. Businesses relocated, workers operated from temporary offices, and diesel generators became the soundtrack of downtown Auckland.
Unlike dramatic grid collapses, this crisis unfolded slowly, exposing the risks of aging infrastructure and overreliance on a handful of critical assets.
5. The largest blackout in human history
Location: India
Date: July 30–31, 2012
Duration: Roughly 13.5 hours initially, with restoration continuing afterward
People affected: More than 620 million
No blackout in history has affected more people.
The outage began when parts of India's northern grid collapsed under heavy demand and operational stress. The following day, failures spread further, affecting 22 states and leaving more than half of India's population without power.
Trains stopped, traffic systems failed, hospitals relied on backup generators, and millions of people faced severe disruption. At the time, the blackout affected roughly nine percent of the world's population.
The sheer scale of the event remains difficult to comprehend: if every affected person formed a single country, it would have been one of the largest nations on Earth.
Why these blackouts matter
These bizarre outages share a common lesson: power systems are only as strong as their weakest link.
A relay in Canada, a lightning strike in New York, a tree in Switzerland, aging cables in New Zealand, and grid stress in India all triggered consequences far beyond what anyone anticipated.
Researchers studying cascading failures have repeatedly shown that modern electricity networks can be vulnerable to seemingly minor disruptions that spread rapidly across interconnected systems.
As nations invest billions in renewable energy, smart grids, and digital infrastructure, the challenge is no longer just generating electricity. It is ensuring that one unexpected event does not send millions back into darkness.
The strangest blackouts in history remind us that in the energy world, sometimes the smallest failure can create the biggest story.
